Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence have become allies in the fight against violence in urban centers.
São Paulo, February 2019 – It is not always possible to avoid becoming a victim of violence in cities, but some actions can contribute to increasing people's protection, making it more difficult for criminals and malicious individuals to act. To present solutions and new technologies for personal and property security, the 22nd Exposec – International Security Fair In May, the event will bring together manufacturers from the sector in Brazil and abroad, as well as internationally recognized experts, at São Paulo Expo.
Organized by Cipa Fiera Milano and held by Abese (Brazilian Association of Electronic Security Systems Companies), Exposec will bring together 800 exhibiting brands to present updates on products and services in the segments of Electronic, Private, Personal, Public, Property and Business Security.
And there is reason for concern about security in Brazil. The 2018 edition of the Atlas of Violence, produced by IPEA (Institute for Applied Economic Research) and the Brazilian Forum on Public Security, indicates that, in ten years, 553,000 people were victims of urban violence, that is, 153 homicides per day, of which 71.1% were killed by firearms. The reality is even more impactful when comparing states, according to the study. In some of them, the growth in the homicide rate raises a local alert: Rio Grande do Norte (256.9%), Maranhão (121%), Acre (93.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (58.8%).
The alternative lies in the private sector.
For Rafael Danzi, Operations Manager of Moni Software, an exhibitor at Exposec, stated, "Unfortunately, the protection offered by the state is limited." "The actions of malicious individuals are amplified by impunity; therefore, private security is consolidating itself as an alternative to reduce problems related to urban violence," she analyzed.
According to Danzi, the main way to defend against urban violence starts with individuals adopting safety-oriented behaviors. Changes in routine and daily actions drastically reduce the scope for action by those who threaten our freedom. “Naturally, people don't yet have this predisposition; it's up to companies that develop security projects to guide clients to act in this way. A security company must, above all else, lead the client to see risky situations from our perspective. From there, the consumption of security solutions and projects will increase, and questions about products and services will decrease, as there will be a greater understanding of what is being consumed,” says the executive.
For Jefferson Timo, responsible for Safe Cities projects at Hikvision Brazil, According to [name], who will also be at Exposec, the need for security in a city demands extensive project planning and a wide variety of camera models and equipment. "Providing uninterrupted monitoring in areas considered high and medium risk, and in strategic locations, while utilizing extremely advanced resources, requires a robust infrastructure.".
Timo points out that cutting-edge technologies like facial recognition are becoming more accessible. “This technology has been around for a while and used to be very expensive. Furthermore, its use was limited by several factors such as environment and lighting. Today we have Hikvision Dylan which, regardless of whether the environment is open or closed, offers a great advantage to the customer. We have cameras with this technology installed, for example, in the Rio Sul Shopping Mall, in the Botafogo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.”.
The expert points out that the demand is very high, as governments are looking for security technologies. There is still controversy regarding facial recognition because some people believe it's for monitoring everyone. That's not actually the case. Facial recognition works based on a database specified by the client. This could include, for example, wanted individuals, or something outside of crime, such as missing persons. It could also be used for access control at a government agency or company.”.
AI is an ally.
