New technologies in electronic security meet the demands of condominiums.
Electronic security technologies are already being developed according to the social behavior of each condominium. This analysis comes from Cláudio Procida, head of the Training Center at ABESE – the Brazilian Association of Electronic Security Systems Companies. “There’s a change in the behavior of residents, who now see the importance of a more efficient security project,” he states. “And the reduction in the cost of equipment has also helped.”.
At Exposec 2019, which ends this Thursday in São Paulo, technological innovations in electronic security are the main attractions. “Insecurity has taken over the country and families have moved into condominiums. But criminals have evolved their methods, bringing violence to these types of housing as well,” says Procida. “Condominium managers and residents have already realized the importance of electronic security, but there still needs to be a change in the social behavior of these condominiums,” he believes.
In the search for a solution that provides autonomy for the customer, the Came do BrasilDuring Exposec, the company is presenting the Came Connect app. Launched at the fair, the technology allows residents to grant entry to others even when not physically present, without needing an intermediary. Users can operate gates, turnstiles, and doors via their smartphones.
Another product launch at the fair is the new Europa line of sliding gate operators from... Compatec. The product has five configurations to serve residences and even large condominiums. The company is also showcasing the new AM10 monitored alarm control panel: ten zones, two programmable partitions, LED keypad, app for arming and disarming via mobile phone, data transmission via dial-up, WiFi, Ethernet, and GPRS.

Simplifying electronic locks
Using a motion sensor, Marco Valin, an undergraduate student in Computer Science, and Bruno Vasconcelos, a master's student in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology at Mackenzie Presbyterian University, developed a low-cost lock for use in businesses, condominiums, or homes.
Part of the IoT Engagers Island at the ABESE Connect Arena during Exposec 2019, the project is in the prototype phase. “We started this project a month ago and there’s still a lot to be done,” says Valin. “The idea is simple: the system generates a token, similar to those used by banks, which creates a password every hour. This password will be recognized by the motion sensor, which will open the lock.”.
Syrian-Lebanese Hospital: the subtle balance between the security of authorities and the care of patients.
The Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, in São Paulo, frequently receives authorities and celebrities, which requires, on the one hand, meticulous planning, and on the other, some ability to improvise. To address this issue, Oswaldo Canho, the hospital's security coordinator, attended Exposec – International Security Fair, the main event in the sector in Latin America, this Wednesday (22).
“"The admission or hospitalization of a public figure, that is, a person who frequently appears in the media, requires the preparation of a detailed technical plan and involves several areas: protocol, press relations and, of course, security itself," he said.
Sometimes, however, it's necessary to deviate slightly from the schedule, as an authority figure might suddenly decide to have lunch in the cafeteria instead of restricting themselves to a private room. On such occasions, it's necessary to balance the security of the official with the dedicated care for the thousands of patients the hospital serves.
“Because of unforeseen events like this, it’s common for us to receive complaints from patients through our ombudsman the following day,” Canho stated. “We must remember that, regardless of the authority, the client/patient is the king. That’s why we are careful with complaints and are required to respond to them within 24 hours.”.
The Syrian-Lebanese Hospital has 120 security guards, including its own professionals and third-party personnel, and an intelligence center supplied with images from 1,800 cameras. Among recent and high-profile cases, Canho mentioned former First Lady Marisa Letícia and the President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad. Among regular patients, he cited Silvio Santos and the singer Roberto Carlos.
Contingency plans and crisis management strategies need to be updated.
Ensuring the safety of guests and immediately meeting their needs in special situations such as fire, flood, and others, is the challenge facing the hospitality sector. Given this scenario, Carlos Bassi, director of engineering and safety for Latin America at the Grand Hyatt group, emphasizes the importance of carefully developing a contingency and crisis management plan and training employees, especially those who will be part of the team implementing the plan.
Bassi spoke this Wednesday (22) during the 2ndHospitality Security Congress, The expert, speaking at Exposec – International Security Fair, highlighted the need for constant renewal of contingency plans and crisis management. He noted that the country currently has thousands of establishments whose main characteristic is hospitality, and which present problems such as a lack of efficient access control, with thousands of people circulating with different objectives at all times. "These places require highly technical and specialized security, generating significant challenges," says Bassi.
As an example, he recalled that the first case of an active shooter in a hospitality establishment occurred in Brazil in 2000, when a student entered a movie theater located inside a shopping mall and shot and killed several people. "The most recent and the penultimate cases occurred on Tuesday, the 21st," he said. "Therefore, this is no longer an isolated case, but a real risk that requires a contingency plan and crisis management," he warned.
Crazy Dogs presents its Single Board Computer Labrador
Geovane Fedrecheski, a researcher at CITI/USP (Interdisciplinary Center for Interactive Technologies of the University of São Paulo), presents, during Exposec – International Security Fair, the Caninos Loucos Program, which developed the first Single Board Computers (SBCs) with a completely open structure, hardware and software, for the Internet of Things (IoT). The program was named Labrador.
“The goal of the Program is to form a community of developers for the use of IoT technology in the industrial sector and to disseminate embedded electronics learning in Brazil,” says Fedrecheski. “The Labrador board is Caninos Loucos' first open-source Single Board Computer with the functionalities of a computer.”.
One of the advantages, according to Fedrecheski, is that Labrador is capable of running on an Android or Linux operating system, accessing the internet via network cable or Wi-Fi, playing videos, and running word processing programs.
