Facial recognition helps to automatically and remotely measure fever in São Paulo.

Patients arriving at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in São Paulo have their temperature automatically measured remotely by a computer vision system installed in a kiosk near the reception area.

Composed of a thermal imaging camera and facial recognition algorithms, the system scans the face and measures the temperature automatically. Upon detecting that the patient has a fever—one of the symptoms of COVID-19—the artificial intelligence technology sends an alert via smartphone to the on-duty nursing staff to quickly initiate the triage and isolation protocol, in order to prevent the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 virus contagion in the hospital environment.
