Latin America is suffering from a new wave of cyberattacks, and the Brazilian scenario is worrying. More than 3.4 billion attempted attacks were identified from January to September, out of a total of 20 billion across Latin America and the Caribbean. The data was released in the third-quarter report by Fortinet, a global leader in comprehensive, integrated, and automated cybersecurity solutions.
The new data was made available on the Fortinet Threat Intelligence Insider Latin America platform, a tool that collects and analyzes cybersecurity incidents worldwide. The report highlights the widespread use of DoublePulsar by cybercriminals. The threat takes advantage of vulnerabilities that have already been resolved, which demonstrates the use of outdated software. In Brazil alone, almost 284 million attempts to breach networks using this method were recorded.
According to the Fortinet engineering team, DoublePulsar is an attack vector that has been prominent in the region, particularly targeting companies in the telecommunications, financial services, education, and government sectors.
The report's data also indicates that the number of "brute force" attacks, which are repeated and systematic attempts to guess credentials by sending different usernames and passwords to access a system, has been on the rise since last quarter. Of every 10 major exploitation threats identified in the last quarter, six were of this type.
