The Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction of Pernambuco is looking for partners to extend the project to other cities in the Metropolitan Region.
Allies in the fight against the pandemic new coronavirus, Drones have become part of the daily routine for the population of Reef. Because of their potential for monitor crowds and prevent Covid-19, The Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction of Pernambuco (IRRD) is seeking partners to expand its aerial monitoring work.
“We need investment so that we can expand the scope of this research throughout the city of Recife and especially throughout the Metropolitan Region,” said the coordinator of IRRD, Hernande Pereira da Silva.
Flying over fairs and public markets in the capital of Pernambuco twice a week, the equipment covers up to three locations per day. The mission is to map crowds and measure people's temperature with infrared cameras to identify possible patients with fever, one of the symptoms of Covid-19.
“Today, drones are an important ally, both from a technological standpoint and in terms of resource economy. They optimize our decision-making processes,” stated Colonel Luciano Nunes da Silva, manager of the Integrated Center for Social Defense Operations (Ciods).
To climb over the heads of so many people, you need special authorization from... National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). "It's an aircraft, it has propellers, and that could cause some kind of accident. That's why ANAC prohibits this type of operation, except with authorization from public safety authorities," said José Edson Júnior, a technician from the Technology Directorate of the Military Police.
Regulars at fairs and markets are familiar with the monitoring and messages coming from above. "It [the drone] is used to check our temperature, to see if we have Covid-19. Many people here have already had it, and we feel more at ease when they [drones] appear," said market vendor Ana Maria da Silva.
It was confirmed, this Saturday (1st), 1,741 new cases of Covid-19 in Pernambuco. The State Health Department (SES) also recorded 40 deaths. With this, the total number of cases in the state is 96,746, in addition to 6,597 deaths of people infected by the new coronavirus, numbers that began to be recorded in March, at the beginning of the pandemic.
