For every 100 fraudulent online purchases in Brazil, 35 are made in S\u00e3o Paulo. This is one of the conclusions of the 2020 Fraud Census, prepared by Konduto, an anti-fraud company for e-commerce and digital payments, based on the analysis of more than 175 million orders that passed through the company's systems between January 1 and December 31 of last year.<\/p>\n

To identify the states and regions with the most and fewest fraudulent requests, Konduto considered the fraud share, which takes into account the representativeness of each federative unit within the scenario of digital payment fraud throughout Brazil. The index is calculated by dividing the number of attempted frauds in each state by the total number of attempted frauds in the country.<\/p>\n

The survey results showed that S\u00e3o Paulo accounts for 35.57% of attempted fraud and leads the ranking by a wide margin, even with a drop of more than 5% compared to last year. Following are Rio de Janeiro (10.34%), Minas Gerais (7.55%), Bahia (6.51%), and Paran\u00e1 (5.49%). The Federal District, whose fraud share fell from 3.63% to 2.50%, is the federative unit that lost the most positions on the list compared to last year (from eighth to 12th). On the other hand, Amazonas, which fluctuated from 0.48% to 0.64%, is the one that rose the most (from 23rd to 19th).<\/p>\n

The report also breaks down the data by region. In this case, the Southeast is first in attempted fraud (with 55,33%, compared to 60,03% in 2019). The Northeast is second, with 18,74%, now followed more closely by the South, which jumped approximately five percentage points compared to last year and accounts for 14,01% of illegitimate requests. The Central-West (8,01%) and North (3,92%) regions round out the list.<\/p>\n

\u201cS\u00e3o Paulo and the Southeast region concentrate the largest number of illegitimate orders because they are the state and region with the largest share of national e-commerce,\u201d explains Tom Canabarro, CEO and co-founder of Konduto. In this case, according to him, the activity of cybercriminals ends up being diluted amidst a significant number of \u201clegitimate purchases.\u201d In places with less market share, the opposite occurs, with fraudulent purchases standing out against a smaller total number of legitimate orders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe report even shows how different calculation methodologies, which do not consider fraud share, indicate that proportionally, states in the North and Northeast, such as Maranh\u00e3o, Cear\u00e1, and Par\u00e1, may have more attempted fraud, which would not make sense in absolute numbers,\u201d Canabarro concludes.<\/p>\n
