With AI, companies save over US$1 million in data breach costs, says research.

An IBM survey suggests that applying Artificial Intelligence resources to Cybersecurity generates visible savings, both in financial resources and reaction time. According to the company's experts, the technology should be a priority in defense strategies.

The most recent research, “The Cost of a Data Breach”, by IBM, The study analyzed the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on automation processes and incident response. According to the study, companies that extensively applied the resource saved US$1.76 million in data breach costs, compared to organizations lacking AI.

According to the report, even with limited use, Artificial Intelligence has great potential in the field of Cybersecurity. Companies that used automation tools in just one or two use cases reduced losses from data breaches by approximately US$1.32 million.

“Today, the volume of data handled by Security is too large for the human brain to process flawlessly. That's why AI has become such a powerful ally, especially when managing alerts and demands that are more or less critical to the business,” explains Troy Bettencourt, Head of Incident Response at X-Force, in a webinar presenting the report.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence integrated throughout the operation, including various IT toolsets and capabilities, reduced breach lifecycles by 108 days. Those with limited application had a reaction time 88 days shorter. According to IBM spokespeople, this is a crucial finding for corporations unable to overtly implement protection resources.

“Time is an essential metric for any security program. Understanding these parameters at each stage of defense can define the company's success in preserving its assets. Therefore, it is necessary to keep this criterion in mind when establishing plans, considering the essential role of AI in accelerating response and reducing costs,” explained John Hendley, Head of Strategy at X-Force.

Integration Required

However, despite the visible benefits from these new technologies, the Cyber sector has shown difficulty in integrating them broadly. Nearly 40% of the organizations studied had not yet implemented AI in security automation, and 33% apply it in only one or two use cases in their IT operations.

According to spokespeople, the market presents a significant opportunity to increase the efficiency of detection and response. Furthermore, the trend of widespread use of this resource by cybercriminals should lead to increased use by companies as well.

The study proposes that Cybersecurity invest more and more in automation, in order to increase the speed and accuracy of incident responses, at a lower cost. "The strategy for using AI needs to permeate the entire Cyber sector, so that the security process is fully optimized," comments Bettencourt.

Experts also advise companies to use mature Artificial Intelligence tools. “We will see significant advancements in the field of Generative AI this year. However, these face challenges such as hallucinations, data integrity, and inaccurate processing, leading to false positives and negatives. At this time, the best approach is to invest in reliable solutions already established in the market,” concludes the X-Force expert.
