Florianópolis International Airport began testing facial recognition technology in early October. The goal is to evaluate the technology in a pilot project by the federal government, as the Ministry of Infrastructure wants to implement the process nationwide.
The ministry's press office explains that recognition and identification technologies, as well as automatic boarding, already exist and function at electronic gates (e-gates), but a unified national system has not yet been structured.
The idea is that the new project can check and validate passengers based on different government databases, initially starting with the driver's license (CNH).
The pilot project tests are now being carried out with volunteer passengers from Latam. Identity is confirmed at the time of online check-in using a photo of the airline ticket. Boarding the plane will take place via biometrics, without the need to present documents.
The technology was developed in partnership with Serpro, the Brazilian government's information technology company. The service developed an app that allows users to register a photo along with their CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID number).
