With the electronic monitoring sector heating up as people seek to reduce costs during the Covid-19 crisis, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) have become essential to guarantee the uninterrupted operation of electronic security systems against power outages.
With the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, various sectors of the country had to adapt and seek alternatives to reduce costs. Because of this, there was a boom in the market for electronic access control systems, which began to help residential and commercial condominiums maintain security and balance their budgets during times of social isolation.
According to data released by the Brazilian Association of Electronic Security Companies (Abese), the search for electronic access control systems registered an increase of 20% between April and May of this year. Among the benefits, such as controlling the flow of entry and exit through a remote monitoring center, remote access control can reduce security costs by approximately 50%, making it an important solution given the current economic situation in the country.
Due to this upward trend in the electronic security market, the Brazilian manufacturer of power protection equipment, TS Shara, also observed a 30% increase in sales of its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) lines for the electronic security market during the same period, encompassing solutions applied to electronic gates and remote access control systems.
“Like any other online system, remote access control optimizes various electronic devices, such as voice and presence sensors, as well as surveillance cameras, which depend on a good internet connection and electrical grid to function. In case of power failure or outage, the entire operation is compromised. The presence of a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) in the infrastructure of these access control systems can make all the difference,” explains Pedro Al Shara, CEO of TS Shara.
Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), also known as no-break systems, protect critical systems, such as remote access control systems, by preventing voltage spikes and fluctuations in the electrical grid. After power outages, the customized settings of a piece of equipment or system revert to default settings, which can cause problems if not restored. In some Brazilian states, such as Goiás, Paraná, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, and Ceará, the Fire Department has made the installation of UPS systems mandatory at condominium gates since 2017.
“The rule is also valid for preventing power outages in case of fire, in order to guarantee the opening of gates and facilitate a possible evacuation of residents. Therefore, ideally these environments should have an alternative that guarantees this distribution of energy, to ensure that even the shortest interruption in supply does not harm the system as a whole,” concludes Al Shara.
