São Paulo, March 2019 - Less polluting, energy-self-sufficient transportation alternatives that are not subject to fuel price fluctuations are something that stimulates the imagination of many people. After all, vehicles are the main culprits behind environmental pollution. Already circulating in various parts of the world, including Brazil, electric vehicles, at first glance, fulfill the function of reducing pollution. However, the issue is still quite controversial.
According to Alexandre Moana, president of Abesco (Brazilian Association of Energy Conservation Service Companies), an energy matrix based on clean energy production is necessary to attest to the efficiency of electric vehicles. "We may simply be transferring the pollution production from the car engine to the power plants, as is the case with units that use coal or diesel," he explains.
Alexandre, who will speak on May 22nd at 10:45 AM about “Impacts on leveraging electric mobility” during the IX Congress of Clean and Renewable Technologies for Energy Generation, which takes place during Ecoenergy – International Fair and Congress of Clean and Renewable Technologies for Energy Generation, between May 21st and 23rd in São Paulo, reminds us that Brazil currently has the best solution for electric mobility. “Today we can talk about hybrid cars that can be powered by both ethanol and electricity, two fuels that represent less pollution,” he states. “Meanwhile, other countries are still discussing the best alternatives, which are only expected to arrive in 50 years.”.
Critical of cars powered exclusively by electricity, Alexandre points out that electricity generation itself has been gaining other solutions.
Solar energy
Among various solutions, a car equipped with photovoltaic cells, that is, one that uses solar energy to generate electricity, is still a dream. Some projects have been developed, but Alexandre doesn't see any possibility of making them viable in the short term. "The area for installing panels on cars is not sufficient to guarantee the necessary energy," he assures.
The solution may lie in the one found by researchers at the University of Santa Catarina. They have developed a bus with batteries powered solely by solar energy. "But the generation is not done through panels installed on the vehicle," notes the president of Abesco.
The bus travels a relatively simple 25.3-kilometer route between two UFSC campuses: Sapiens Parque, in Canasvieiras, and the Central Campus. The batteries are charged with electricity generated by photovoltaic cells installed on the roofs of the UFSC Research Center. “This could be a solution. Installing solar panels that will capture and store energy. And the batteries would be charged in these locations. That way, we would have electricity without producing pollution,” says Alexandre.
Currently, Brazil is the largest producer of hydroelectric power, considered non-polluting. However, the percentage of these plants in the country's energy matrix has been declining. In other countries, thermoelectric plants are used, mostly fueled by coal and diesel oil, which are highly polluting. "The use of fossil fuels in vehicles is more efficient than in electricity generation. Therefore, it generates less pollution.".
