Today, two-thirds of the fingerprint sensors found in Brazilian ATMs are supplied by HID Biometrics.
Between May 10th and 12th, HID BIOMETRICS' multispectral imaging biometric sensors can be seen up close at EXPOSEC 2016 – an international security trade show that typically attracts nearly 40,000 industry professionals during its three-day event. Using Lumidigm's multispectral imaging technology, HID Biometrics employs state-of-the-art technology to scan and authenticate fingerprints from the inside out. That is, in addition to the outer layer of skin, the sensor reads a deeper sublayer, irrigated by blood vessels. Besides preventing fraud, this allows for rapid authentication, even if the fingers are injured, wet, oily, dry, or worn by time.
Today, of the 90,000 ATMs equipped with biometric sensors, more than 60,000 have adopted multispectral imaging technology. Although many people can now withdraw money safely, simply, and conveniently, there are still almost 70,000 terminals scattered throughout the country that rely exclusively on the outdated card/PIN combination. At a time when the complexity of banking processes is increasing, as are the risks, it is important to have a technology that meets these needs and also makes life easier for users – especially the most vulnerable. Biometrics does just that.
According to the Biometrics Research Group, which recently released a special report titled "Biometrics and Banking," the biometric banking segment is growing rapidly. Revenue jumped from $900 million in 2012 to $1.8 billion in 2015. Projections indicate that 2016 will end with $2.2 billion in revenue and that by the end of 2020, this figure will rise to $11 billion – demonstrating the strength of this market, which is growing by double-digit percentages annually and represents a third of the global biometric market. Projections also indicate that in 2020, 622 million authentications of banking transactions made with mobile phones will be carried out, moving $5.6 trillion in payments secured by biometric technology.
SAFETY IS EVERYTHING
In light of the unprecedented intrusion into the US government's system that occurred last year, HID BIOMETRICS officially addressed the issue by releasing a white paper on how to protect against the criminal use of stolen biometric data (Protecting against criminal use of stolen biometric data). The fact that biometric authentication is the only method that links a person to multiple physical and digital documents was the first point highlighted. After all, the intrinsic characteristics of an individual – especially their fingerprint – eliminate a significant number of fraud attempts. Even so, fingerprint images can be stolen. Hence the importance of having a system that not only recognizes the fingerprint image but also requires proof that the true user is indeed activating the biometric sensor at any given time. In this sense, multispectral imaging technology employs various wavelengths of light in conjunction with modern polarization techniques to obtain unique fingerprint characteristics.
